Specialist Chartered Respiratory Physiotherapist Exeter, Devon

Julia, physio specialising in breathing pattern disorders

Hi, I’m Julia Gamlen, a respiratory physiotherapist with a special interest in treating disordered breathing. I have 34 years of clinical experience in the NHS, and am based in Exeter, Devon.

If you are looking for support with unpleasant symptoms related to your breathing, I can help.

You may be experiencing:

  • Shortness of breath going uphill or upstairs, or even at rest
  • Difficulties with talking
  • Fatigue
  • A persistent cough, blocked nose, or sinus problems
  • Snoring
  • The feeling of not being able to get enough air in
  • Difficulty breathing during your chosen sport

You may refer yourself after being seen by your GP or hospital doctor and have a diagnosis, eg, asthma, bronchiectasis, COPD, Long COVID. I also take direct referrals from private ENT and respiratory consultants in the South West.

OR you may have had tests only to find there is no significant underlying condition to cause your symptoms.

OR you may want to book a ‘breathing MOT’ if you are looking for a diagnosis or would like to optimize your breathing.

My assessments are individualized and detailed using widely recognized and validated methods. On request, I will communicate findings with your GP or specialist doctor. You may wish for information to be shared with your workplace or educational establishment.

I will discuss and explain your symptoms and create a personalized treatment plan adapted to suit your lifestyle. This plan may include breathing exercises, myofascial release, stretching and strengthening, and/or the use of equipment.

You can be seen at the South West MS Centre in Exeter or at your own home.

Take a look at the Conditions page for more information on the breathing-related conditions I can help you with.

Check the Contact Details page for how to get in touch, or use the Contact Form.

For current charges, please see Pricing.

I am more than happy to chat through suitability for breathing retraining over the phone or by email before taking a booking.

Why choose a chartered physiotherapist?

Chartered physiotherapists provide a medically grounded, comprehensive approach. Their specialist training, evidence-based methods, and integration with other healthcare services make them the preferred choice for those seeking to improve their breathing and health. It is a legal requirement for chartered physiotherapists to be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council to practise. The HCPC protects the public by ensuring necessary standards for training, skills, and experience are met.
